Why Monsoon

Our Story

Monsoon Education was founded by Shivanka Udamalwaththa, an Electrical Engineering graduate from the National University of Singapore whose passion has always been education.

Shivanka’s journey in teaching began long before Monsoon. As a student, she was often the person classmates came to for help, and during a gap year before university, she was invited back to teach at her former high school.

While studying engineering in Singapore, she continued tutoring part-time, supporting local and IB students through an education agency. After graduating, Shivanka worked as an applications engineer, but her passion for teaching never faded.

When she moved to Canada in 2018 and later took a break from engineering to care for her young family, she returned to tutoring students in her community. What began with neighbourhood students soon grew through word of mouth.

Why Monsoon Was Created

Through her experience as both a tutor and a parent, Shivanka noticed important gaps in traditional tutoring services. Students needed more than generic lessons. Parents needed reassurance, communication, and a simple way to manage scheduling and payments. Tutors needed better support, prepared materials, and a structure that allowed them to focus on teaching.

Monsoon Education was created to bring these pieces together: personalized 1-on-1 tutoring, learning coordinator support, curriculum-focused lesson planning, and clear communication with families.
